Instagram Trends 2025

ree

As we tip into the second half of the year, I thought it would be useful for you to have a little overview of the latest features and trends in the world of Instagram. This is by no means a comprehensive list, more of a snapshot to help you stayed up-to-date. Despite the algorithm infuriating small brand and creatives, Instagram remains a vibrant, high-impact platform for small businesses looking to grow their brand, connect authentically, and drive engagement. From AI-driven strategies to creative video formats, here’s a curated guide to the top Instagram trends your small business can leverage for maximum impact.

1. Supercharged Carousels & Shareable Formats

Carousels now allow up to 20 photos or videos, offering small businesses a rich canvas for storytelling—from step-by-step tutorials to behind-the-scenes peeks. Opt for variety and authenticity over perfection. Additionally, content made to be shared—especially carousels and stories—is crucial, as Instagram's algorithm now prioritises “sends-to-reach.”

2. Trending Audio & Reel Engagement

Leveraging trending audio—especially in Instagram Reels—can significantly boost visibility. Explore the native Reels audio tools and watch current uses to capture tone and relevance. You can also add audio to still images to make them more engaging.

3. Reel Trends That Resonate

Small businesses can ride viral wave formats strategically:

  • “Throwing a Fit” Reveal: Use humorous entrances to introduce products or fresh displays but be careful to ensure this fits your brand's identity and personality first!

  • “I Grieve Different”: Share the honest, behind-the-scenes reality of business life with a mix of humour and vulnerability. Viewers favour this content over the more promotional 'saley' stuff.

  • “Drummer Boy” Transitions: Showcase your creative process or product assembly with dynamic, flowing clips.

  • Other formats (“Who Said That?”, “Six Syllables”, “Pretty Little Baby”, etc.) offer playful ways to convey brand personality.

4. AI: Your Secret Social Superpower

Generative AI is officially part of the marketing toolkit. From caption generation to ideation and scheduling, AI tools are empowering small teams to produce high-quality content smarter and faster. Get to grips with using the right tools that complement your work process.

5. Subtle Advertising

Carefully created Instagram ads that aren't obviously don’t look like ads, are more likely to perform better so why not give it a try on your next sponsored post and measure results.

6. Authenticity & AI-Enhanced Storytelling

Consumers value transparency. Share your values, origin story, or founder journey, even with imperfections. AI tools can help spark authentic ideas or streamline production—but always stay true to your brand tone.

7. Micro-Influencers & UGC Over Celebrities

Smaller influencers often drive better engagement, especially in beauty and lifestyle niches. In Q1 2025, beauty brands saw better returns working with micro- and mid-tier creators over high-profile celebs. Encourage user-generated content (UGC)—its peer-to-peer, trust-building appeal is highly effective.

8. Short-Form Reels = Higher Engagement

Reels and short-form videos (< 90 s) drive 2× more engagement than longer formats and are key in reaching Gen Z. With attention spans dropping, these formats support discovery and conversion.

9. Community-Building & Value-Driven Content

Focus on brand-led storytelling—share valuable insights, customer stories, or behind-the-scenes glimpses that reflect your ethos. Consistent brand aesthetics and messaging reinforce recognition and trust. Also, content that entertains while educating—“edutainment”—continues to perform better. Think tutorials, fun tips, or micro-videos that offer real value.

For small businesses, Instagram in 2025 is less about doing everything and more about doing what matters—strategically, creatively, and authentically. Embrace Reels, leverage AI, utilise bigger carousels, and let your values and personality guide your storytelling. With the right mix, you'll not only improve your visibility—you'll be remembered. Focus on one or two that more relevant to you and your brand and give them a go. Let us know how you get on.
