We take a dip into French Riviera-inspired ceramic tiles and homewares, with artist Alexandra Browne
Tell us a little about what you do and your background
I hand paint ceramic wall tiles and lamp bases and have a matching hand-embroidered fabric line and homeware collection.
I began my career as an architect before pivoting to interiors, working as an designer for Rose Uniacke, which is where my idea for my own business was born. Working on a project for a client’s holiday home in Cap Ferrat, I couldn’t find the right tiles for his bathroom. So I decided to create my own - fired in a kiln in my basement.
What made you launch it as a business?
Having my first baby, I wanted to be my own boss and have flexibility. Ceramics was always a hobby and during lockdown I started to sell my tiles, just to see how it went and I have never looked back. I now have 3 young children and somehow manage to juggle it all.
Where do you find creative inspiration?
Travelling to beautiful places. I get so inspired by the colours, smells, food and fashion of exotic places, such as India where I work with artisan suppliers. Also the beach and people watching - you can never get bored - there's never one person the same.
What gets you out of a creative rut?
Running, whatever the weather I put my earpods in and get outdoors. I'll soon end up daydreaming and before I know it be back at the house with a bit of creative fire.
Describe your typical working day
My working day is fairly short because of the school run. I start work at about 9.30 and have to finish by 3. Tile days are my favourite, I get into a rhythm of sketching out each girl, I then paint the swimwear on each one first, then go back to the hair colour and skin. Each tile soon gets her own personality. In the evenings is when I usually load the kiln; this is the bit I hate, you never know how it's going to fire and I often have a restless night worrying about it!
What has been the biggest highlight and challenge to date?
The biggest highlight is honestly each time I get an order, no matter how big or small I still can never believe it! I do lack confidence, which is my biggest challenge. I think because my business is still only me I'm quite isolated and over-think things, A LOT! I often have a crisis in confidence but luckily my husband is very level-headed and supportive. I'm sure he finds me very annoying!
Best nugget of wisdom to share with your fellow Creative Ducks?
Be meticulous, patient and dream big!
