Instagram Reels: What is B-roll and How to Use B-roll Content Clips?

In a nutshell B-roll is the extra footage you layer over your main message. Instead of always talking directly to camera, you show what you’re doing, your environment, or small moments that bring your story to life.

Think of it as the visual storytelling layer of your reel. What B-roll actually does

It helps you:

  • Keep your reels visually interesting (without fancy edits)

  • Tell a story without needing to be on camera the whole time

  • Make content feel more natural and less “performative”

  • Create quicker, easier reels (huge win)

It’s also a game-changer if you’re a bit camera shy. You can still show up and connect, just in a softer way.

How to use B-roll in a reel

The simplest way to think about it:

1. Start with your message: What are you trying to say? (a tip, a story, a thought)

2. Add B-roll over the top: Layer clips that visually support what you’re saying.

3. Use text or voiceover

  • Text on screen (quick and easy)

  • Or a voiceover if you want to add more personality

4. Keep clips short and natural: Think 1–3 seconds per clip. Nothing overcomplicated.

Easy B-roll ideas you can film anytime

Workspace moments

  • A wide shot of your desk or studio

  • Hands typing, writing, or sketching

  • Pouring a coffee or tea

  • Opening your laptop or flipping through a notebook

  • A flat lay of what you’re working on

Behind the scenes

  • Tidying or setting up your space

  • Unboxing materials or new stock

  • Writing a to-do list

  • Packing orders or supplies

Personal touches

  • Your favourite mug or notebook in use

  • Putting on make up or glasses

  • Arranging flowers or styling a table

  • Pouring a drink or reading a magazine

Out and about

  • Walking into your workspace or a venue

  • A quick pan of your surroundings

  • Your shadow on the ground

  • Opening a door or gate

A simple reel formula you can reuse

If you want something practical to follow:

  • Clip 1: Pouring coffee

  • Clip 2: Opening laptop

  • Clip 3: Writing notes

  • Clip 4: Close-up of your work

A hook overlay text:“Things that help me stay consistent with content…”

Done. Simple, effective, no overthinking. Check out this simple example here...

The key mindset shift

You don’t need to create content…You just need to capture what you’re already doing.

That’s where B-roll really shines. It turns everyday moments into content, without adding pressure. You can learn more about B-Roll and creating Reels in my forthcoming workshop - Reels 101. Email sarah@thecreativeduck.co.uk to be notified when the event opens soon. Limited spaces.
